How Much Can You Save Daily With An Electric Car?

Even when EV prices may be slightly higher, running and maintenance costs are quite less in comparison to petrol cars

Electric cars are gaining popularity across the globe, as they offer multiple benefits. One of the important benefits is the savings in fuel and maintenance costs. But exactly how much can you save everyday with an electric car? To know the answers, let us compare the costs of electric cars vs. petrol powered cars.

Fuel cost - Electric vs. petrol

There are many options available in the market for both electric and petrol-powered cars. For simplification in calculation, let us consider popular electric cars such as Tata Nexon EV or MG ZS EV. These have approx. efficiency of 5 km / kWh. For ICE cars, let us take Tata Nexon (petrol) that has real-world mileage of around 15 km/liter.

Here, we will take the petrol price at Rs 100/liter. This is a rough average of petrol prices in India in 2025. Similarly, the assumed average electricity cost will be Rs 6 per kWh. We will consider home charging because public charging with a fast charger can cost higher at around Rs 10-20 per kWh.

With the above numbers, we can calculate the cost of travelling 50 km every day. In case of a patrol car, daily petrol consumption will be around 3.33 liters per day. That means Rs 333 per day for 50 km of daily travel. In comparison, an electric car will need 10 kWh per day. That will cost Rs 60 per day. So daily fuel cost savings with an electric car will be around Rs 273 per day.

Maintenance costs

When calculating daily savings with an electric car, one also has to consider the maintenance cost. In most cases, it has been seen that maintenance cost of an EV is around 50% less than a petrol-powered car. In case of a car like Nexon, the maintenance cost is around Rs 8,000 per year on an average. That means daily cost of Rs 22 per day. Since EV maintenance cost is around 50%, here, the number will be Rs 11 per day. We can add this daily saving to the fuel saving (Rs 273 per day) derived earlier.

So, total savings per day with an electric car comes at around Rs 284 per day. This will be significant when you calculate the yearly savings. You can use these savings for various purposes such as shopping, travel or buying accessories for your car.

What about battery replacement cost?

EV batteries are now far more advanced in comparison to what one would get a couple of years earlier. Most carmakers offer attractive warranty on the battery packs. For example, Tata Nexon EV comes with an 8-year / 1.60 lakh km warranty. Similarly, MG ZS EV has an 8 years / 1.5 lakh km warranty on the battery pack.

If you choose premium models, you can even get battery warranty options. For example, Mahindra XEV 9e offers lifetime warranty on the battery pack for the first registered owners. With robust warranty options, you really do not have to worry about battery replacement cost.
