New Delhi April 30 2026 - Highlighting a concerning shift in adolescent behaviour Ms. Jyoti Arora, Principal of Delhi World Public School, Noida brought attention to alarming trends in schools students’ perception of vaping during a seminar - held at the Constitution Club of India.
Referring to a study conducted among nearly 1000 students aged 14 to 15 across Delhi NCR and other metropolitan cities Ms. Arora revealed that
·
96% of students were unaware that vaping is
illegal
·
Additionally, 89% perceived vaping as a “cool”
and less harmful alternative to smoking
·
while 50% admitted they viewed it as a trend
necessary to fit into peer groups.
These findings, she noted,
underline the growing influence of peer pressure in shaping adolescent choices.
“Peer pressure is a very important factor that determines the story of an
adolescent” Ms. Arora stated emphasizing how young individuals often receive
conflicting signals from parent, educators and their social circles.
She pointed out during the
seminar - “Educating for Values,
Protecting Our Children: Keeping Novel Nicotine Products Away from Children.” -
hosted by Mothers Against Vaping (MAV), that while families and schools strive
to instil the right values peer groups often redefine priorities making it
challenging for adolescents to make informed decisions. In such an environment
she stressed the importance of building resilience and critical thinking among
students to help them distinguish between right and wrong.
Ms. Arora further highlighted
that awareness alone is not sufficient to address the issue. She advocated for
integrating anti-vaping education into school curriculum and creating more
engaging relatable communication strategies.
“Students connect more with
voices from their own generation” she noted suggesting that Gen Z influencers
and youth-led campaigns can play a crucial role in countering harmful trends.
She also emphasized the evolving
role of educators stating that they must go beyond traditional teaching methods
to actively reinforce values and guide students through complex social
influences.
The awareness seminar was an
initiative aimed at addressing the rising concern of vaping among adolescents
by bringing together educators healthcare professionals and community
stakeholders.
The seminar underscored the need
for a collaborative approach with Ms. Arora stressing that meaningful change
can only be achieved when school, parents and healthcare institutions work
together.
“Rather than shifting
responsibility all stakeholders must come together on a common platform to
guide and support our children” she concluded.
The event marked a significant
step toward initiating dialogue and driving collective action to combat the
growing influence of vaping among youth.
